Bodega Sierra Almegrera

Where history, climate and dedication come together in every bottle.

In the sun-drenched east of Almería, where desert meets the Mediterranean Sea, you’ll find Bodega Sierra Almagrera. This is where wines are crafted with character: born from extremes, shaped by craftsmanship, and rooted in thousands of years of tradition.

From Melbourne to Andalusia

The story of this bodega doesn’t begin in Spain, but in a garage in Melbourne, Australia. There, José Miguel García made his first wines as a child, together with his father Nick and his friend and mentor Mario. Those early experiments—simple but passionate—sparked a lifelong dedication to winemaking.

In 2003, through a friend, José Miguel discovered a rugged piece of land in Cuevas de Almanzora, in the sunny southeast of Almería. Despite widespread doubt—viticulture seemed impossible due to the heat and poor soil—he followed the advice of renowned Australian viticulturist Richard Smart:

“If you have water, passion and hard work, you can make great wine here.”

Wines with a story

After years of preparation, the first wines were released in 2013: Caballo Blanco, followed by Caballo Español® and Sierra Almagrera®. The collection grew with additions like the fresh Macabeo and the expressive Antas® series. The wines are vinified in ancient caves, providing natural cooling and stillness during the aging process.

García works closely with master winemaker Domingo Haro and renowned oenologist Ignacio Figueroa. Their combined expertise—blending tradition with innovation—forms the heart of the winery. The grapes come from three distinctive sites: the high-altitude Laujar Valley (1,200 m), the coastal slopes of Burjulú, and the rugged hills of Antas, cradle of the ancient El Argar civilisation.

The wines

Bodega Sierra Almagrera produces powerful yet elegant wines, shaped by extreme conditions: abundant sun, wide temperature shifts and mineral-rich, rocky soils. The vineyards are spread across three unique landscapes—each adding its own expression to the wine.

Under the labels Caballo Español®, Sierra Almagrera® and Antas®, the winery creates wines with character. From refined Syrah and Tempranillo to crisp Macabeo and a rosé that pays tribute to the women of El Argar. Award-winning wines such as the Caballo Español® Gold Edition reflect the winery’s commitment to both tradition and progress. In 2025, this wine was awarded the ICEX Gold Medal at ProWein Düsseldorf, one of Europe’s most prestigious wine fairs.

Each bottle tells a story of origin, craftsmanship and devotion.
