“Bodegas El Grifo” is the oldest winery of Canary island and among the 5 oldest of Spain. In 2025, they are celebrating their 250 Anniversary. They were founded in 1775 and ever since, has never ceased crafting its wines.
Volcano heritage
The neighboring Timanfaya National Park, like a colossus, takes a nap for centuries. However, one day he unleashed his fury. On September 1, 1730, the Cuervo Volcano woke up and fire emerged from its bowels. The lava gave way to an unusual landscape and a unique viticulture in the world. Fire, wind and rock create extreme conditions from which wines with a marked character and personality are born, with which we discover the soul of a land and climate unique in the world.
With the Sahara Desert as its continental neighbor, it only rains on average 35 days a year in Lanzarote. The trade winds bless with their humidity, but the clouds pass by. Volcanic ash maintains that scarce and invaluable moisture.
Chabocos
Framed in a Biosphere Reserve landscape for more than 30 years, which has been protected by UNESCO, here mineral wines are made from the ashes of a volcano. He is not the only prodigy. Anticipating the future, with the usual visionary attitude, the winter harvests take place, a milestone in the
hemisphere.
In these harsh conditions, the varieties Malvasía Volcánica (being a mix between Marmajuelo and Malvasía Aromática and now is endemic from Lanzarote) , Listán Negro, Listán Blanco, Vijariego and Moscatel are mainly pampered and cultivated.
These pre-phylloxera vines have survived uncultivated for more than two centuries. They are grown in rows, in holes and in even deeper ‘chabocos’.
Grape variety malvasía volcánica lanzarote
The Malvasía Volcánica, a variety unique to Lanzarote, is an exceptional grape adapted to the island’s unique conditions, particularly its limited water resources. It is a crossing of Marmajuelo and Malvasía Aromática, and now is endemic from Lanzarote and known and appreciated for its Atlantic character.
Cultivated in volcanic soil and combined with aging on the lees, it produces wines of great complexity and a captivating aromatic profile. Its floral notes and pronounced minerality are a true reflection of Lanzarote’s volcanic character.
