Pago de Tharsys

A pioneer in altitude, origin and precision

Just outside Requena, at 700 to 800 metres above sea level, lies Pago de Tharsys, a winery where history, craftsmanship and innovation come together. The estate is built on limestone soils that are around 30 million years old, formed by sediments from an ancient freshwater lagoon. This poor, stony subsoil, combined with a continental climate and Mediterranean influences, produces healthy grapes with fresh acidity, ripe aromas and excellent ageing potential.

A winery with staying power

The story of Pago de Tharsys begins in 1808, when the original cellar was carved into solid rock. In the 1980s, Vicente García, the founding father of Valencian cava, breathed new life into the estate. The first vintage appeared in 2002, marking the start of a new chapter with a clear focus on quality, origin and a strong identity. Since then, Pago de Tharsys has become a well-established name within both DO Utiel-Requena and DO Cava, and has been certified organic since 2015. In recent years, the winery has continued to innovate, focusing on night harvesting, sustainable viticulture and wine tourism.

Wines with a distinct signature

The range is diverse, but the vision is consistent: terroir, precision and a deep connection to place. The Vinos de Pago series lies at the heart of the estate. These wines come exclusively from the estate’s own vineyards surrounding the winery and carry Spain’s highest classification for origin.

The white Albariño de Pago is crisp, chalky and taut in style, with a profile more reminiscent of northern Spain than the inland region. The Bobal Diana García, from higher altitude plots, shows Bobal at its most refined: energetic, structured and long. The Cerámica range focuses on structure and ageing potential, with wines that benefit greatly from time and patience.

From vineyard to cellar: care and craftsmanship

The grapes are harvested at night, when temperatures and concentration are most favourable. In the cellar, the approach is restrained: no unnecessary manipulation, but room for each grape to show its own character.

In addition to still wines, Pago de Tharsys also produces artisanal distillates like Marc de Cava, and plays an active role in wine tourism. With over 10,000 visitors annually, it has become a well-known destination in the region.

Origin as a guiding principle

Pago de Tharsys shows how powerful terroir can be when given the space to speak. Thanks to sustainable practices, ancient soils, altitude and a sharp focus on quality, this estate produces wines that could not be made just anywhere.

Every bottle tells a story of place, vintage and the vision of people who know exactly what they are striving for.
